What Is Chin Augmentation?
The technical names for surgical chin enhancement are genioplasty or mentoplasty. This procedure enhances the appearance of the chin, neck, and jawline by improving the contours in the lower face. This often requires an implant, carefully placed around the existing bone to add additional structure. A chin implant will increase the size of the chin and help to create a more balanced facial appearance. Chin augmentation is ideal for patients with a weak or recessed chin or jawline.
The Chin Augmentation Procedure
We perform this procedure in an off-site operating suite, conveniently located near our practice. It is an outpatient procedure and our patients typically return home the afternoon of their surgery.
The procedure starts with anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. Chin augmentation can be performed with either local anesthetic and a sedative or general anesthesia. We’ll talk with you about the risks and benefits of both anesthesia options. Whatever you choose, our patients are carefully monitored to ensure the safest possible surgical experience.
Once you’re comfortable, a small incision is made. This incision is placed under the chin or inside of the mouth. Both locations do an excellent job of hiding any scarring that may occur. The implant is placed through the incision and is carefully positioned on the bone. Finally, the incisions are closed and the area is bandaged.
This procedure typically takes less than an hour. Since it is often paired with other treatments, you may spend more time in the operating room as other facial plastic surgery needs are addressed. Dr. Singleton will tell you what to expect before surgery, so you can arrange for a ride home after your procedure. Before you leave, Dr. Singleton will discuss aftercare and the results of your procedure with you and your caregiver.
What Do Chin Implants Look and Feel Like?
Once in place, a chin implant looks and feels like natural bone. The implants we use are small and solid, typically made from a biocompatible silicone. Each implant is specially molded to the patient, ensuring a tight fit around the jawbone. Chin implants come in many shapes and sizes, allowing us to truly customize and create a unique look.
Recovery After Chin Augmentation
Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure and will require some rest days and time off from work. Give yourself time to heal properly and take things slowly as you return to activity after treatment. Most patients are back to their regular activities in just a few days. Plan for 7 days off from work if you work a desk job. If your job is strenuous, talk with Dr. Singleton for a personalized recovery timeline. You may need additional time off from work.
The first few days are the most difficult in the recovery process. Dr. Singleton may ask you to stick with a liquid-only diet at first, typically for 1-2 days after surgery. This gives the implant time to settle before chewing disturbs the placement. We also ask patients to sleep face-up with their head elevated. This helps to reduce swelling and protects the healing incisions. If you’re uncomfortable, we can provide a prescription for pain medication.
Procedures that Complement Chin Augmentation
Chin augmentation provides a stunning transformation on its own. When paired with a complementary procedure you can see even better results. If you’re interested in pairing your chin implant surgery with another facial procedure, come see Dr. Singleton and ask for a treatment recommendation.
We find that pairing treatments together can dramatically enhance results. Not only do patients receive the benefits from two procedures at once, they also experience an expedited recovery period. You’ll recover from multiple treatments concurrently, which means less time off from work.
What procedures pair well with chin augmentation? For the right patients, the following treatments can enhance the overall results:
Patients with a weak chin often suffer from an out of balance facial appearance. By pairing chin implants with rhinoplasty, we can create balance and provide better results for both procedures. How does rhinoplasty enhance the chin? Few people realize that the chin and nose work together. A large nose can look proportionate when paired with a larger chin, while a weak chin can cause the nose to look oversized, even if it isn’t. Rhinoplasty with chin augmentation stops this optical illusion and creates a stable, balanced facial appearance.
Many of our rhinoplasty patients can also benefit from chin augmentation.
Fat under the chin can create the appearance of a weak chin. Liposuction removes excess fat under the chin, allowing an implanted chin to really shine. Neck liposuction can also improve contours along the jawline.
Dr. Singleton is a skilled liposuction provider. He uses this fat extraction technique to enhance contours under the chin, along the jawline, and on the neck.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chin Augmentation
Every chin augmentation consultation we offer includes time for questions and answers. We encourage patients to make a list of their questions and bring it to their initial consultation. Find the answers to the most commonly asked questions below.
Also known as genioplasty or mentoplasty, chin augmentation surgery is a type of cosmetic surgery that enhances the appearance of the chin, neck, and jawline by improving the contours in the lower face. Typically, a small, solid implant is positioned around the existing bone to give the chin additional structure. This implant is made from a biocompatible silicone, has the firmness of bone, and is molded specifically to meet your unique needs to produce results that look and feel natural.
Examination of any chin augmentation before and after photos will reveal an enhancement in the size and shape of the chin.
Patients with a weak or recessed chin or jawline make ideal candidates for the surgery.
Patient comfort is a priority at Capital Facial Plastic Surgery. Thankfully, discomfort during the procedure is easily managed with pain medication. We use local anesthetics or sedation via general anesthesia to ensure a comfortable surgical treatment. We’ll discuss your options during your consultation.
It will take your surgeon less than an hour to complete the surgery.
The chin augmentation recovery time varies per person, but patients typically require 1 to 3 weeks to heal, and a few more weeks for minor side effects to completely subside.
Patients usually return home the same day as the procedure. A lot of rest is required, however, so it’s a good idea to take a leave of at least a week from work. Regular activities can be resumed after around a week. More strenuous activities such as exercise should be avoided for a couple of weeks after surgery.
The first few days after surgery are the most difficult. Patients can expect minor to moderate swelling and bruising for around 3 days post-treatment, but such issues will gradually subside afterwards. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help manage any discomfort.
Your surgeon will also provide you with detailed instructions on the things to do and avoid doing to ensure a smooth and comfortable chin augmentation recovery. You’ll likely have to stick with a liquid-only diet for these 3 days as chewing motions could interfere with the implant while it’s settling. You’ll also have to sleep face-up while keeping your head elevated.
Around a week or so after surgery, your doctor will remove the stitches and examine how well you are healing.
The treatment requires a small incision to be made under the chin, where the resulting scar is extremely well-hidden. The scar will then fade over time to become far less visible. Examination of any chin augmentation before and after photos will reveal nearly invisible scarring.
Patients who only require minor improvements to be made to their chin or jaw can undergo non-surgical chin augmentation, instead. This simply requires dermal fillers to be injected into the target areas; no incisions are made in the mouth or under the chin.
The treatment results last for a lifetime.
Yes. Many patients combine the procedure with other complementary cosmetic treatments, such as rhinoplasty and neck liposuction.
Chin augmentation costs between $4,000 and $6,000 depending on your desired results and the complexity of the procedure required to achieve them.
